#MitchellCurious: Railways

Each week we’ll bring out some unique items from our rich and varied collections. Reflecting the constantly changing world events, social conditions, technological advancements and cultural ideas since The Mitchell opened in 1877, our collections cover books, photographs, maps, journals, music scores and historical documents.

Travel back in time to the golden age of railways. Come along and see some items from our collections including a drawing of a Great Northern Railway 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive, which was the first of a class that would include the “Flying Scotsman”; coverage of the Tay Bridge Disaster; the iconic Forth Bridge; and the Bennie Railplane: the most powerful steam locomotive to run on British rails.
