What's On in Glasgow Life
Alasdair Gray: City Recorder
Artist and writer Alasdair Gray lives and works in Glasgow. Since attending the Glasgow School of Art in the mid 1950s he has been a prolific poet, playwright, novelist, painter and printmaker. His work has been celebrated in books, exhibitions, public commissions and festivals.
This exhibition presents a large selection of artworks by Alasdair Gray owned by Glasgow Museums. It begins with printed illustrations relating to Gray’s most famous novel, Lanark: a Life in Four Books. The main section of this exhibition focuses on the City Recorder series, a large body of work that Gray created as an ‘artist recorder’ for the City of Glasgow in 1977. It includes paintings, drawings and collages and forms a unique portrait of the city at that time.
